Manufactured and retailed by Asprey during the early 1860’s, this antique jewellery box is veneered in Coromandel with brass edging and stringing. The lid is inset with an engraved brass monogram bearing the initials ‘MML’.
The two self-locking Bramah locks are stamped with ‘ASPREY’S PATENT’ around the circumference of the front aperture. ‘Asprey’s Patent’ refers to the design of the lock, whereby the front aperture slides to the right or downwards, disengaging the locking mechanism and thus allowing the box to then be opened.
The interior of the box, lined with purple velvet and moiré silk, is fitted with a removable leather-bound jewellery tray; the focal point being a raised, leather-bound castellated compartment decorated with a further ‘MML’ monogram in gold-tooling. Beneath the tray is a large leather-lined area that accompanies a rear partitioned section.
This box was manufactured at a time where Asprey had recently absorbed the business of Edwards; a sign of which is the inclusion of Edward’s Patent brass hinges. An embossed leather panel on the inside of the lid displays the gold tooled maker’s mark of, ‘ASPREY. MANUFACTURER TO HER MAJESTY. 166 BOND ST W.
The spring-loaded lower drawer contains a large velvet and silk-lined area.
Both Asprey Patent Bramah locks come with their original key.
