Dating from 1837, this magnificent antique jewellery box was manufactured and retailed by Wells & Lambe of Cockspur Street, London. It is veneered with kingwood, inlaid with a brass greek key perimeter design, and finished with scribed right-angle brass edging and recessed brass side handles.
The interior, lined with blue moiré silk and matching velvet, is fitted with a solid mahogany tray that, when removed, uncovers a large velvet-lined area underneath. The internal rims are inlaid with brass stringing accompanying ‘E. Wells & Co Patent’ concealed hinges. The ruched velvet panel in the lid drops forward to reveal a concealed letter wallet and a removable, freestanding kingwood framed mirror. Within the letter wallet is the gold tooled mark of, ‘Wells & Lambe – Manufacturers To The Queen – Cockspur Street’.
The independently lockable lower drawer contains a large velvet and silk-lined area.
The Muckleston patent Bramah lock and lower drawer lock come with their original keys.
Unusually, this box retains its original leather outer travelling case with lambswool interior.
