This miniature antique dressing case in Coromandel dates to 1895. It was manufactured by one of the finest English cabinetmakers, George Betjemann & Sons of 36 & 38 Pentonville Road, London. There is an applied silver monogram to the centre of the lid bearing the initials ‘M.E.O’.
The interior of the case, lined with blue Morocco leather, velvet and moiré silk, is fitted with ten engraved silver lidded glass bottles and jars. The removable leather-bound tray reveals a shallow velvet-lined area beneath.
A ruched velvet panel in the lid springs forward, with the push of a concealed button, to reveal a leather-framed mirror on the reverse.
A push button to the rear of the box releases a spring-loaded front drawer containing a velvet-lined jewellery area and a full width ring/ cuff-link channel. Inset to the front rim of the drawer is an engraved retailer’s plate that reads, ‘Mappin & Webb – Facing the Mansion House, London’
The lock is fully working and comes with its original key.
