Dating from 1858, this large antique jewellery box is veneered and cross-banded in Calamander, edged and inlaid with brass, and finished with recessed brass side handles and a Bramah lock. The lid is inset with an ornate engraved brass monogram. The box was manufactured and retailed by one of the finest English cabinet makers, David Edwards.

The interior of the box is lined with blue velvet, moiré silk and Morocco leather decorated with Edward’s signature ‘greek key’ gold tooling. A heavy Calamander tray, with a further centrally mounted Calamander-walled area, is removed to reveal a large velvet-lined area beneath.

The interior rims of the box are veneered with cross-banded Calamander, concealing Edward’s Patent brass hinges. An embossed leather panel on the inside of the lid displays the gold tooled maker’s mark of, ‘EDWARDS. MANUFACTURER TO HER MAJESTY. 21 KINGS STREET. BLOOMSBURY, LONDON’. The ruched velvet panel in the lid can be reversed to reveal a removable free-standing leather-bound mirror.

The Bramah lock comes with its original key.
