Whilst I wouldnt normally initially focus on a box’s internal lining material, I thought that this particular box should serve as an exception; this magnificent antique jewellery box is lined with the exact colour batch and roll of silk velvet that was commissioned by King Charles Ill. It is a magnificent deep royal blue that I have accompanied with a matching moiré silk.
The box is veneered in Coromandel with brass edging, stringing, side handles and a central monogram bearing the initials ‘L.D’.
The front flap of the box drops forward to allow the two top sections, both with four partitioned compartments and two ring channels, to swing out at right angles to the box. A large velvet-lined compartment on the lower level becomes accessible. A brass plate to the rear of this compartment releases a spring-loaded, independently lockable, lidded lower drawer below. The full width rear section contains a concealed floor panel which, once removed, reveals a secret velvet-lined compartment beneath.
Unusually, the reverse of the front flap can be opened up to reveal a removable leather-bound jewelley display tray.
The Bramah lock and lower Chubb drawer lock are fully working and come with their original keys.
