This is a magnificent example of an Edwards piece that retains its original vibrant wood colour. Unusually, this box has a lower drawer – something that is strangely uncommon for most Edwards boxes of this type.
Dating from 1832, this antique jewellery box was manufactured and retailed by one of the finest English cabinet makers, Edwards. It is veneered in Brazilian Rosewood, edged in brass and finished with recessed brass side handles and Bramah locks.
The inside of the box is lined with green velvet, Morocco leather and moiré silk. The top leather-bound and velvet-lined jewellery tray, with a removable sub-trays, lifts out to reveal a lined base section below.
An independently lockable lower drawer pulls out to display a large velvet-lined section
The interior of the lid displays the gold-tooled maker’s mark of, ‘Edwards, Manufacturer to His Majesty. 21 King St Bloomsbury, London’.
The Bramah locks are fully working and come with their original key.
