Dating from the early 1870’s, this extra large radial edged antique jewellery box in Coromandel features a Betjemann Patent ‘Automatic’ mechanism, four concealed drawers and an internal lockable secure drawer. The exterior casing is inlaid with brass corner mounts, brass stringing and a central crest of a Tyger sejant.
This Betjemann Patent mechanism operates so that as the lid of the box is raised, the two winged side trays and the front panel automatically open out simultaneously; this action is then reversed as the lid is lowered.
The interior of the box is lined with purple velvet and moiré silk. Four concealed, spring-loaded drawers, manufactured from solid satinwood, are fitted within the front interior fascia; these are deployed by using two visible buttons and two hidden buttons within the rear hinge. An internal Bramah lock secures a solid Coromandel strong box drawer in the compartment above. Interestingly, a secondary Bramah aperture to the front of this drawer is false and is used simply to pull out the drawer when inserting the key.
There is a brass retailer’s plate to the front flap of the box that is engraved with, ‘Leuchars & Son – 38 & 39 Piccadilly. London’.
Both the exterior and interior locks come with their original keys.
