Dating from the late 1830’s, this antique jewellery box is veneered in vibrant kingwood, edged and strung with brass, and finished with recessed brass side handles.
The interior of the box is lined with purple velvet and Morocco leather. A leather-bound tray can be removed to reveal an open lined area beneath.
The independently lockable lower drawer is lined with matching velvet and leather.
The ruched velvet panel in the lid drops forward, with the aid of a spring-loaded link from the top lock plate, and reveals a removable freestanding, kingwood framed mirror. Additionally, a concealed letter wallet is fitted to the reverse of the ruched velvet panel; this retains a hand written letter from 1840 explaining the origin of the the engraved initials to the top plate and right-hand side handle.
A paper retailer’s label within this letter wallet reads, Halstaff & Hannaford – Manufacturers – 228 Regent St.
The Bramah locks work perfectly, both being operated by the same key.
The condition of the box is excellent both externally and internally.
