In nearly 30 years of collecting, documenting and dealing in antique boxes, I have never seen woods remotely like these. What’s also particularly interesting is that these woods are all solid rather than in veneer form. The perimeter edges of all the fascias are made from the end grain of black palm wood, the inserts are made from solid chrysanthemum wood, and the edging is made from solid ebony. The centre piece to the lid is a cross section of black palm wood.

The box dates to the late 1850’s and was manufactured in Palais-Royal, Paris.

The interior is lined with peridot green velvet.

The lock retains its original key.
