This miniature antique jewellery box in coromandel, dating from the mid-1870’s, was manufactured by one of the finest English cabinetmakers, George Betjemann & Sons of 36 & 38 Pentonville Road, London.

The interior of the box is lined with blue Morocco leather accompanying blue velvet. There is a removable compartmented leather-bound tray with a shallow velvet-lined area beneath, as well as a compartmented rear section. A ruched velvet panel in the lid springs forward, with the push of a concealed button, to reveal a leather-framed mirror on the reverse.

A push button to the rear of the box releases a spring-loaded front drawer containing a velvet-lined jewellery area and a full width ring/ cuff-link channel. Inset to the front rim of the drawer is an engraved brass retailer’s plate that reads, ‘Scruton – 2 New Street, Birmingham.’

The lock retains its original key.
